Today is Jane Austen's Birthday. Maybe one of the reasons she chose not to marry is no one wrote a poem as splendid as this one for her. Thank you to my poetess friend. (Beats that bottle of bath salts you gave me last year). In India, married women traditionally wore a mangalsutra necklace, depicted below, which consists of black beads ( and gold if you were lucky). Most Indian women, Hindu or Muslim, may own one of these. It is an ugly piece of jewelry with unequivocally polytheistic roots. A reminder that Kali was a bada$$ like Jane and so many more of you out there.
A Kali Mom who lived by the lake
handily destroyed everything in her wake
In Quran class she'd be confounding,
Islamic school PTO she'd be propounding,
The principal begged her husband,
"Take her on vacay, we need a break!"
Her feminist rants warranted intervention
Her book clubs were bones of contention.
Will she start a new committee
in which she will referee
divisive community wide tension?
Her most dangerous habit has us flinching
like the rack when the torturer's winching
We won't mention it by name
her ability can't be tamed,
let's just say, "Keep her out of the kitchen."
