Time to Get Oot

During a weekend getaway in Toronto, Sakina sensed that Canada had become a very tolerant, multi cultural place after the great nineties influx of immigration and increased programs about tolerance. This was most admirable of course and Sakina felt that she should feel gratitude to the entire husky-filled nation. She had moved to the U.S decades ago but still wondered what her true identity was.
As she watched Niagara's majestic falls, Sakina felt remorseful that the mild, non-confrontational European in her was slowly draining away. She wondered if she was becoming a xenophobic, overworked rarely-vacationing American. She found herself snarling at Ontarian optimism and their pronunciation of certain short vowels.

"After the first couple of days, Sakina had an epiphany. "I know what's wrong with you Canadians," she announced to her relatives. "You're just too happy. You need more American dissatisfaction with life. Some unexplained angst perhaps. I mean why are you so excited about Tim Horton's coffee?  No one gives a hoot.  It's Dunkin Donuts with an accent."
"Oh, you prefer Starbucks, eh?" asked her cousin grinning broadly, ready to turn the car around.

Back in the United States, Sakina's friend Jenny congratulated her. " You're finally becoming American." she said, giving her a high five. "You have an irrational suspicion of Canadians. Soon you may even understand Arrested Development."
