Sakina's friend Natalie had just started working at a rehabilitation center. Most of the residents were people who had struggled with lifelong addictions to drugs or alcohol etc. Some had lost all their possessions or had to give up children due to these addictions. It appeared that Sakina was troubled by the tales that Natalie would tell her and wished she had more time to give so that Natalie could process some of this. It also vaguely troubled her knowing that marijuana would soon be legal. Who knows what changes might occur. But Sakina could only worry about one thing at a time and currently had her own challenges at home.
Sakina's family had come to visit her in her time of need. After a tearful reunion, her relatives handed her a suitcase. Sakina opened it and up and uncovered a plain pink dupatta. Underneath lay the hidden treasures like Prohibition era smuggled goods: oversized bars of English chocolate, boxes of Irish truffles; orange wedges dripping with milky goodness.
Kristen, her German neighbor had returned from a summer in Munich the previous day. She also had a gift bag full of goodies for Sakina with names like knoppers that sounded like weapons but were just slices of paradise wrapped up in praline.
Sakina recalled her joy at receiving a huge box of truffles on Mother's Day. She assessed all the new treats and did wonder. Not to take away from the terrible effects of substance abuse out there. Just wondering. Had anyone with a serious addiction ever bitten into liquid caramel or a Cadbury's fruit and nut bar?
