Sakina and Carla were collaborating on a writing project about Greta Thunberg and her online meeting with David Attenborough. It was an epic moment in history as Greta told the octogenarian how his documentaries had inspired her and Attenborough, in turn, expressed how he had been thrilled at her relentless activism. Sakina and Carla were to meet for a sort of working lunch. Deliveries can sometimes be time consuming and her son Faisal was to be in the area so offered to speed up the process by picking up their order. Sakina was driving back to the office from the bank so she put her phone on speaker and called the local eatery .
The cheery employee, Kevin, apologized and said they no longer took orders over the phone and did she have the app. Sakina was not a complete Luddite. She had downloaded many apps but she had a severe gluten allergy so did not see the need to possess the app to this particular establishment that was basically a bakery. Kevin was most helpful and directed Sakina to the website where she could place the order but would need to create an account and add a credit card.
Sakina hung up the phone, slightly frustrated but aware of the necessity to keep up with modernity. She drove back to the office, logged onto the restaurant's web-site, thought of a password and finally the order was placed. She received a confirmation email. Meanwhile she and Carla began working on the article that needed editing.
Faisal called from the restaurant. What name was the order in? Had it really gone through? There was no trace on it. "They are asking if you can send a screenshot of the confirmation email?" said Faisal, all too aware of the ludicrousness of the request. Sakina scrambled around with her phone and immediately obliged.
Sakina and Carla could hear some sounds on the phone. "Oh THERE it is. Oh we must've got the wrong order number somehow".
Carla gave Sakina a hug. Faisal soon dropped off the bagged lunch to the office. He found his mother and her friend grateful but they were also exchanging a look that said we are trying to keep up with technology here but couldn't the guy who takes the order have just handed the order to the sandwich maker?
"I get it Mom" said Faisal. Your generation ruined the planet and my generation is messing with common sense.
"That's 3 frustrated emojis, 2 question marks and a caps lock key" replied Sakina.
